4. 1508 First Ave NE (Dr. Byron McKeeby)
In the early years of the 1900’s, Cedar Rapids dentist Dr. Byron McKeeby, so recognizable with his glasses and bald head as the model for Grant Wood’s “American Gothic,” had his dental office on the upper floor of this commercial building. Although McKeeby later had his dental office on the third floor of what is now known as the Guaranty Bank Building downtown, he returned to this building shortly before retiring in the mid-1940’s. At that time he lived in the house next door at 1512 First Ave. NE. For several decades, the two street-level businesses in the 1508 building were Jones Paramount Pharmacy and Barney’s Paint store.
